PlayVS and Starlight’s Charity Stream Showdown

On Friday, March 14th, PlayVS, the leading scholastic esports platform in North America, GoFundMe, and members of the creator community partnered to host The Charity Showdown to benefit Starlight Children’s Foundation. The event featured streaming creators and Starlight kids Aria and Allison – each on their own medical journey – participating in competitive games, offering an exciting and engaging experience for everyone playing and watching! Over 1,500 viewers tuned into the stream, and the organizations collectively raised $13,650—nearly $4,000 above their goal—with $10,000 of this amount coming as a direct donation from GoFundMe.

The charity stream aimed to deliver happiness to seriously ill kids through a fun day of gaming with some of their favorite content creators, while also raising money for Starlight. Aria and Allison were able to experience the evidence-based benefits of gaming including improved moods, stress reduction, and development of key skills like decision-making, goal setting, and problem-solving.

Adam Garone, CEO of Starlight, and kids impacted by Starlight programs joined The Charity Showdown alongside popular creators like Saint Cola, VikkiKitty, SierraDawn, and BassfromthePast.

“The Charity Showdown was a great opportunity to bring together the creator community and Starlight kids to unleash the healing power of play. Moments like this event can bring so much joy to kids navigating serious illness, providing a much needed distraction from their conditions,” said Garone. “We’re incredibly grateful to PlayVS, streamers and GoFundMe for the generous donation that will help us continue to advance our mission in delivering happiness to seriously ill kids and their families.”

Kooky and Fun Gameplay

Creators had the chance to play alongside Aria and Allison in Mario Party and Mario Kart competitions during the stream. Some fun donation incentives included players to play with their controllers upside down or speak in the voice of a Mario Kart character. Additionally, the event utilized GoFundMe’s new streaming widgets that enable streamers and content creators to fundraise through social media livestreams on popular platforms like Twitch and TikTok. Using these widgets, any online creator – from gamers to social media influencers – can use their platform to activate their community in real-time, sharing and fundraising for the causes they care about.
